Washington's Dulles International Airport - KIAD v2 - by Kambiz Agazi

I'm including version 1 information below for those who did not download it. Version 2 contains all of the changes shown in version 1 plus the ones listed under version 2.

VERSION 2 Released May 1, 2009:

KIAD_KA_v2.bgl and KIAD_KA_v2_cvx.bgl represent a complete rework and update to my original work KIAD_KA.bgl and KIAD_KA_cvx.bgl. You do not need my original work for this update. If you have installed version 1, please remove both .bgl files before installing version 2.

There are too many minor corrections and changes to mention, but Some of the major changes in version 2 include:

1. New or modified taxiways and taxiway signs per the airport specifications including the completion of taxiways w2, w3 and w4. Taxiways w2, w3 and w4 and all signs and connections are based on the most current Washington Metropolitan Airport Authority's Runway 1C-19C rehabilitation proposal, which was presented on April 1, 2009. If this proposal should change (significantly), I will post a modification in a future release. The new taxiways with the proposed rehabilitation of 1C-19C are scheduled to begin in 2009;
2. Modification to the Dulles Jet Center;
3. Addition of the Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum;
4. Addition of the Aerotrain maintenance facility;
5. Complete rework of ALL approaches. In version 1, I added ILS and RNAV(GPS) approaches with transitions and missed approaches for the new runway 1L-19R. In version 2 I have reworked and included new ILS and RNAV(GPS) approaches with transitions and missed approaches for the other runways based on the most current published approach plates. In addition, there were a couple of changes to 1L and 19R, which are also included. To download the approaches, please visit: http://www.airnav.com/airport/KIAD;
6. Airport spot lighting and a single animated radar facility is added; however, to see the lighting and radar you must install fsx_lts and fsxrdrs by Jim Dhaenens, which can be downloaded from AVSIM.
7. Modified parking at RAMP R based on recent satellite images.
8. Modified taxiway lighting to remove the green centerline lighting, which does not exist at KIAD.

KIAD is not perfect, but it is my hope that this scenery modification will bring KIAD a few steps closer to reality with the goal of improving and enhancing the users experience and enjoyment when flying out of or into KIAD.

Installation: There are four bgl and two fx files. The bgl files need to be placed in a scenery folder of your choice - don't forget to activate the scenery in FSX. One location could be the Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\Scenery folder. However, the KIAD scenery should be at a higher scenery priority from that of "other" area scenery including UTX USA and any local or state scenery. The two effects files should be installed in the FSX effects folder. To uninstall, simply remove/delete the files.

I have tested KIAD using FSX sp2, and while I don't anticipate issues with using the earlier versions (RTM and SP1), I cannot guarantee that the visuals will look the same on every setup. While not needed for the scenery to work, I also tested to ensure that KIAD works with UTX USA, Scenery Tech North America, and FS Genesis 10m USA Mesh.

KIAD was tested with and optimized for MyTraffic X 5.2 and WOAI. Terminal airline assignments are accurate; many gate assignments are accurate as well. While KIAD will work with "other" AI packages, I can't guarantee that every airline will park at the correct Terminal or gate when using other AI packages.

While every attempt was made to eliminate errors, there's no such thing as "perfect" scenery. Please let me know if you come across any MAJOR errors or problems.

CREDITS: KIAD version 2 was modified using the powerful and recently released airport design utility by Jon Masterson (ADE V1.40.7). Please visit here: http://www.airportdesigneditor.co.uk for more information. The approach code was created using FAA approach plates and ADE V1.40.7. A special thanks to Jim Vile who is a member of the ADE team and is the author of the approach code module of ADE. The approach code to ALL runways would not have been possible without Jim's KIAD approach tutorial and help. KIAD approach plates can be downloaded here: http://www.airnav.com/airport/KIAD.

VERSION 1 Released February 1, 2009:

On November 20, 2008, Runway 1L-19R at Washington's Dulles International Airport (KIAD) was declared open by the US Department of Transportation. The existing Runway 1L-19R was recently renamed to 1C-19C. The new runway is another north-south runway approximately 9,400 feet long and 150 feet wide. This runway became KIAD's fourth runway.

KIAD_KA.bgl represents a complete rework of the FSX stock airport in order to bring KIAD up to its 2008 status (well almost). Airnav, FAA Diagram, Virtual Earth, Satellite Images on the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority's Web page, the official KIAD airport Web page, personal photographs and observations, FAA airport specifications and ADE V1.37.05 by Jon Masterson were all used to create the updated scenery. There are too many changes to mention but some of the highlights include:

1. New or modified taxiways and taxiway signs per the airport specifications and satellite images;
2. Terminal B expansion, which contains 12 new gates;
3. New Apron areas throughout the airport including around all terminals;
4. Airline Terminal assignments (including the newly completed west wing of Terminal B) per official Web page - many gate assignments accurate as well though I focused more on Terminal assignments as gate assignments tend to change more frequently;
5. The old United Express (UALX) Terminal and Ramp G parking south of Terminal C has been demolished and a new over-flow Ramp R (seen as Gate R parking areas in the airport scenery) constructed in its place - UALX has moved to Terminal A;
6. The Z gates that were completed in April 2005 and that house US Airways and US Airways Express are now included - USAX shares a few gates with UALX at Terminal A as well;
7. The H ramps for Taca and Saudi Arabian Airlines now shown (Actual location is slightly shifted from the real world as to accommodate ongoing D2 enhancements;
8. The ramp Tower at Terminal B is included;
9. The new control tower is properly located and closely resembles the real tower with steel framed building attached - some accommodations needed to bring the Tower close to its real world elevation;
10. Many airport buildings and facilities added including the service areas north of the main terminal, fire stations and large fuel storage tanks per or near real world conditions;
11. The fourth runway 1L-19R has been included in its proper location as well as ALL taxiways as they exist today - I will update the taxiways in a future version as more taxiways are completed;
12. The land class and ground cover type was reworked for the entire airport - this was necessary due to the addition of the new runway which was located in wooded wetlands prior to construction;
13. Accurate Tree cover per recent satellite images;
14. All runway specifications including lights, markings and approach lighting and equipment per airnav;
15. New ILS, runway identification and frequencies per FAA for the new runway 1L-19R;
16. Runway 1C-19C (previously 1L-19R) ILS and runway markings changed to reflect new designation;
17. FSX stock approach code as it existed in 2004 was modified for 1C-19C due to the designation change;
18. Full RNAV (GPS) and ILS approaches added for the new runway 1L-19R, which are based on the KIAD approach plates;
19. ALL runways are activated using the x-wind runway technique in ADE, which was first introduced by Jim Vile;
20. Enhanced cargo area parking;
21. GA parking area located north of the Cargo Ramps modeled per aerial photos - this area is set aside for small/light private general aviation; and
22. Dulles Jet Center and Ramp parking completely reworked and enhanced - this area, which is located adjacent to the east wing of the main Terminal, is occupied by both Signature and Landmark Aviation.

It is my hope that this scenery modification will bring KIAD a few steps closer to reality with the goal of improving and enhancing the users experience and enjoyment when flying out of or into KIAD.

Installation: There are two .bgl files. One contains the airport scenery modification to the FSX stock KIAD and the other contains exclusions/land class ground cover information. Both of the .bgl files need to be placed in a scenery folder of your choice - don't forget to activate the scenery in FSX. One location could be the Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\Scenery folder. Start up FSX and the scenery will be active. To uninstall, simply remove/delete the two files. The .gif file contains a logo for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority - the entity that oversees the operation of both KIAD and KDCA.

I have tested KIAD using FSX sp2, and while I don't anticipate issues with using the earlier versions (RTM and SP1), I cannot guarantee that the visuals will look the same on every setup. While not needed for the scenery to work, I also tested to ensure that KIAD works with UTX USA, Scenery Tech North America, FS Genesis 10m USA Mesh and GEXn;

KIAD was tested with and optimized for MyTraffic X 5.2 and WOAI.

Special note: KIAD_KA.bgl was created using the powerful airport design utility by Jon Masterson (ADE V1.37). Please visit here: http://www.airportdesigneditor.co.uk for more information. The approach code was created using FAA approach plates and ADE V1.39 Beta. A special thanks to Jim Vile who is a member of the ADE team and is the author of the approach code module of ADE. The approach code to runways 1L-19R would not have been possible without Jim's KIAD tutorial and help. KIAD approach plates can be downloaded here: http://www.airnav.com/airport/KIAD. I plan to add an LOC/DME approach for both 1L and 19R in a future release. I will also complete the new taxiways between 1L-19R and the Terminals, which are scheduled to be completed by mid-2009.

Happy Flying!
